Matthew was born and baptised in the parish of Fairstead, Essex in 1787, but by 1790, his parents were living in the neighbouring parish of Terling. Matthew was still there with his parents in 1801 aged 13, but was not with them in the 1811 Terling census.
In 1815, he married Elizabeth SKINSLEY at the isolated parish of Paglesham some 22 miles away. They lived first in the parish of Southchurch near Southend, where 5 children were born, but 3 died young. Matthew was a gardener. About 1825, they moved to the Milton area of Southend where four more children were born and baptised at Prittlewell. In 1841, Matthew was an agricultural labourer living at Jail Farm in Barling, a small village on the other side of a creek to Paglesham.
Matthew and Elizabeth remained in Barling for the rest of their lives, where Matthew was a gardener. In 1861 he was living with their eldest daughter, Betsy, while Elizabeth was a live-in nurse at the nearby home of Joseph Brown, a farm bailiff. Betsy was mentally handicapped and remained with her parents until their deaths, after which she was looked after by her sister Martha at her home in Shoebury
Both Matthew and Elizabeth died of old age when they were nearly 80. Their son Daniel of Wakering was a Methodist local preacher while their son Henry was transported to Australia for burglary. Their youngest daughter Martha married a market gardener, Henry MANN

A family notebook states that Matthew WENDON was born 18Aug1787, and the 1851 census has Matthew b Fairstead 1790. The parish register of Fairstead has a suitable baptism

Henry WENDON was convicted of burglary at Chelmsford Assizes on 15Jul1850 and sentenced to 10 years transportation (HO27/91 p280) He sailed as a convict on the 'Sea Park' to Western Australia on 30Dec1853 arriving 5Apr1854; he was granted a conditional pardon there on 8Mar1856 (Western Australia Gazette 11Mar1856)
Henry became a shepherd in Castle Hill, Queensland where he died of heart disease on 8Feb1881 age 52 (death certificate)
