Henry was born in 1831 at Ovington in North Essex where his father was a husbandman or agricultural labourer. Like his older brother William, however, Henry left the district and moved South. By 1851, they were both grooms. Henry was in Abridge village, parish of Lambourne working for the Owen family. William was married and working in Rochford. It seems that Henry moved nearer to his brother William, since in 1858 he married Martha WENDON at the Rochford Wesleyan chapel. When they married, both Henry and Martha were living at Barling where Henry was now a gardener, but they set up home in the hamlet of Sutton near Rochford. After the birth of their first three children, they moved to Cockater Farm in Shoebury. Henry then obtained a loan from a building society to build a row of fpour cottages named Elim Cottages where they spent the rest of their lives, bringing up nine children. Henry established a successful market garden in the large plot of land attached to the cottage. This was quite an achievement for someone who started life as an agricultural labourer. He would boast that “farmers that I worked for in my youth now touch their hats to me”. But he was respected rather than loved by his children. The land was on a 90 year lease which expired in the 1960s. The cottages have since been demolished and the land built over. Henry died in 1907 after making over the cottage and business to his unmarried son Walter. Martha continued to live there until she died, with Walter and her two unmarried daughters Rose and Eva. I remember Elim Cottage in the 1940s when just Eva was living there with all her cats. The front parlour with gas light and a harmonium was hardly used; behind it was the kitchen with black kitchen range. I never went upstairs but there could have been only two rooms – how could they all have lived there? Elim Cottage was the end of the row and a gravel drive led down to the back door and on past a narrow neat lawn with a well and flower beds. Opposite the lawn was a line of tumbledown sheds where all the soft fruit was collected – raspberries, gooseberries and blackcurrants. The old bushes, which gave these fruits, occupied a field behind the sheds and on to the end of the garden, which seemed to go on for ever. The cottage was dark and smelled of cats, but Eva was friendly. She was small with bad teeth and a weather-beaten face. Unlike her sister Rose who attended the N.Shoebury parish church, Eva went to the Methodist church where I played the organ; she was dressed in black, and sang loudly - but off-key.

Handwritten wills of Henry, Martha Ann and their daughter Evaline were found amongst the papers in Elim Cottage, but these wills do not appear to have been registered. Henry’s will has only one witness which may have invalidated it, but Martha’s will appears correct. Evaline’s will was typed and the witnesses were named as members of the family solicitors, Gregson and Golding of Southend; the found copy however has no handwriting, so perhaps Evaline never got round to actually signing the original. On the other hand, she left everything to my father, who I remember inherited the cottage that she lived in.

Shoeburyness Essex, September 28th 1892 I, the undersigned Henry Mann, being of a sound mind, do hereby agree that my two sons, Walter Wendon, and Henry Edwin Mann, shall take equal shares with me in the profits arising from Cockators and Dangers Farms, and all business or property connected therewith, that I may now or hereafter possess. In the event of my dying before my wife, Martha Ann Mann, she shall take my place and share, And at the death of both myself and wife, the implements and stock, together with the five houses known as Elim Cottages shall be valued, and the amount equally divided among my nine children, all crops that may be on the land at the time of my decease to be equally divided between my two sons Walter Wendon and Henry Edwin Mann. Also Norman Whitfield Mann shall be properly provided for, if he likes to go to a trade, he shall be properly bound, or if not, he shall have a place, and his share in the estate upon coming of age. If at any time Archer Hugh Dudley Mann shall find it necessary to enter the business, and work on the estate, he shall take his share from the time he commences to work for the estate, that is to say after he comes of age.
