BIRTH

Ann's death certificate and census records show that she was born in Kintore about 1790, daughter of George Reid and Janet Spence. There are suitable records at Kintore:

from OPR Kintore parish:

m  8Aug1786 George Reid & Janet Spence
C  2Jul1789 b 26Jun Janet  d George Reid & Janet Spence
C 22Feb1792 b 16Feb George s George Reid & Janet Spence
C 21Jul1793 b 15Jul Shusan d George Reid & Janet Spence

No other baptisms to these parents are known, so it is assumed that Ann Grant was actually baptised Janet or her baptismal record is missing. No further records of Janet Reid have been found.

The 1871 census shows that Ann Grant was aunt to Ann Smith. The following tree shows the relationship of Ann to her niece Ann Smith:

George REID–m-Janet SPENCE                                  Mr Geo Grant

                                                                                       Isabella WALKER
                                                                       (Ann's gr.niece)b1844A

The 1861 census shows that Ann was also aunt to Isabella WALKER who was staying with Ann at the time. The great difference in ages between aunt and niece however suggests that she must have been gr.aunt. Isabella's grandparents were Elizabeth Reid and John Grant. So one possibity is that Elizabeth Reid was Ann's sister.
But the tree above shows that Ann had no sister Elizabeth baptised at Kintore. There is no reason to suppose the register is faulty, and there is a suitable alternative baptism of Elizabeth Reid in Aberdeen 5Mar1793 daughter of George Reid and Margaret SMITH (the possibity that George Reid m 1st Janet Spence 2nd Margaret Smith can be dismissed as Susan Reid was born to Janet Spence nearly a year after George married Elizabeth Reid).
Another possibility is that Ann Reid's husband George Grant was John Grant's brother. The baptisms of John Grant's other chidren were witnessed by George Grant and Mr. George Grant. If one George were his brother, then Mr George Grant may have been his father as shown by the following tree.

                     Isabella WALKER (Ann's gr.niece)

There is no proof that this is the correct interpretation, but it seems the most likely at present. If so, George senior might have have moved from Ordiquhill to Aberdeen with his family, to account for the Aberdeen marriages and the presence of both father and son George at the baptisms of John's children. No record has been found to substantiate this hypothesis, but the Roman Catholic baptismal records at ordiquhill have not survived, so it is deemed the most likely at present.

[A George Grant was baptised in Kintore in 1788 son of Robert and Janet Joss. However this George is not the husband of Ann, as the 1851 and 1861 census shows he married Margaret and lived in Fetteresso.]

[Another George Grant was lodging with Ann at the time of the 1841 census. From census data and his death certificate he was born in Grange son of John Grant and Isabella Reid as shown in the above tree. Grange is only about 6 miles from Ordiquhill so it seems likely that he was related to Ann's family.  John was bap 1778 son of John Grant and Jean Kelman and had a brother George bap 1781 at Grange, but this is too late to be the father of John Grant b1796 at Ordiquhill ]

MARRIAGE

from St Nicholas, Aberdeen, register

 m 31Aug1813 George Grant & Ann Reid
[no further information in parish register]

DESCENDANTS

no descendants known; the George Grant lodging with Ann in 1841 was b1810 in Grange son of John Grant a farmer and Isabella Reid
he married Jane McPhie in 1839 moved to Glasgow and died there in 1876. Grange is only 6 miles from Ordiquhill so very likely related as this is yet another connection between the Grant and Reid families (see above tree). Possibly John and George (senior) were brothers, children of John Grant and Jean Kelman
