8 Martha GEORGE 1690-1759

9 Robert George

1m Edward PAINE 1716
2m Robert KING 1722

Martha George was born in 1690 at Steeple Aston, Oxfordshire, where her father Robert, was probably a blacksmith.  At the age of 23 she married Edward Paine there, and moved six miles to Bletchingdon where a son and daughter were born. Before her second child was baptised, Edward died and was buried in Bletchingdon.

Two years later, she married Robert King, a blacksmith at Bletchingdon and baptised five children there between 1723 and 1734, though two died as infants.    Robert himself died in 1734 aged 35. Once again Martha buried her husband before the baptism of his last child.

Martha now had several young children to support, but  how she managed is not known. She may have been buried at Rousham near her birthplace in 1759 age 69

BIRTH

Martha George was of Steeple Aston in Oxfordshire at her first marriage there in 1713; there is a suitable baptism at Steeple Aston:

C 21Oct1690 Martha dau of Robt & Anne George of Steeple Aston

MARRIAGE

Martha PAIN was a widow when she married Robert KING-8 at Bletchingdon in 1722.  Only one possible PAIN/Martha marriage has been found, in 1713 at Steeple Aston, 5 miles from Bletchingdon.  Martha KING baptised children up to 1734 so a 1713 first marriage is possible and there is a suitable burial of Edward PAIN in 1719 at Bletchingdon, leaving little doubt that these records refer to the widow who married Robert King

DEATH

With young children to support after the death of her second husband, it is possible that Martha married for a third time.  No suitable burial or remarriage of Martha has been found at Bletchingdon however.  Martha King is not an uncommon name and there is a possible remarriage at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford in 1754 to Robert Busby, both Martha and Robert were of Tackley, just 2 miles from Bletchingdon.  A Robert Busby of Middle Barton was buried at Duns Tew 27 Jun 1756 (both close to Steeple Aston).  There is a possible burial of Martha King in 1759 at Rousham 4 miles from Bletchingdon:

m 20Mar1754 Robert Busby of Tackley & Martha King of Tackley at St Mary Magd. Oxford, by licence

OR:

B 23Jul1759 Martha King at Rousham

No children of Robert Busby and Martha were found as would be expected if this were Martha George b1690, but Martha was not described as a widow in the licence transcript nor in the parish register, so at present it will be assumed Martha was buried at Rousham in 1759
