The TREWAVAS family probably originated in the Breage area of Cornwall some 10 miles east of Penzance, where there are two farms of this name and Trewavas Head on the coast. The parish register there records the family name from about 1580

George Trewavas baptised two sons at St Buryan at the end of the 17thC. His origin is unknown but both sons moved to nearby Mousehole where the family remained. Three generations of Richards followed. The first was a farm labourer, but the second achieved fame as the Kings pilot for Cornwall, an office which he held for nearly 40 years, including periods of war when he piloted the British fleet to safety from the Spanish and French His son, baptised in 1774 became a schoolmaster and fisherman, but also wrote poetry and letters, many of which were published. Both he and his father were converted to Methodism and biographies of their lives have been published His daughter, Jane, married John WRIGHT, a local fisherman, and baptised ten children at the Methodist chapel. Her husband was the master of a fishing boat and the family spent their life in Wesley Square in the centre of Mousehole
