Soanes Soans Sones Genealogy

The Victoria County History of Oxfordshire notes that the SOANES family were well known makers of lathes (for building house walls and ceilings) and hurdles at Forest Hill from at least the end of the 18th century until 1939. And for most of the 19C a SOANES was parish sexton. Many families were named Soanes and about 150 baptisms were recorded at Forest Hill between 1700 and 1850.

The marriage of Thomas SOANES (10) in 1648 is the first reference to SOANES in the Forest Hill register and probably represents the arrival of the family in the parish. Many of the later SOANES in the parish can be traced back to John SOANES-8 or Thomas SOANES, both born about 1690 who were probably grandchildren of the first Thomas, but the Forest Hill register is deficient from 1680 to 1700 when they were born.

Two generations later, William SOANES became parish clerk at Forest Hill, and his son Stephen is the first generation whose trade as hurdle-maker was noted in the register.

Stephen’s daughter, Rebecca, married a tailor who died; she remarried Thomas YOUNG, a stonemason. in 1840 and moved out of the parish to nearby Kirtlington.
