PENDREY is a relatively uncommon surname in Oxfordshire; the earliest known ancestor is Isaac PENDREY who baptised his son Joseph at Hampton Gay in 1708.

Joseph became a blacksmith in the parish of Cuddesdon and baptised six children in the nearby church of Forest Hill between 1739 and 1751. One of their sons, Bartholomew, raised a family in Black Bourton some 16 miles away, but returned to Forest Hill in later life.

The youngest child of Joseph was named Miriam; she remained in Cuddesdon, where she married the parish clerk of Forest Hill, William SOANES.
