For at least three generations, the MANSFIELD family were wheelwrights and carmen in the heart of Bethnal Green.

The earliest known ancestor is William MANSFIELD who began the wheelwright's business in Digby St just behind the Green; he was born about 1795 possibly in Epping.  He had five sons; the eldest carried on the business and left £4000 when he died in 1872, the other sons were also wheelwrights or carmen in Bethnal Green.

One of them, James, moved to Mape St in Bethnal Green to operate his carman's business.  He handed this on to his son Frank around 1880; Frank married Rebecca from Oxfordshire, but the carman's business failed and he returned to being a wheelwright in Camden Town.  His daughter Alice married Tom SHORT there in 1902.
