Robert MAN was a weaver in Colchester.
His only known son William MANN married Mary HARVEY in Colchester in
1732 and enlisted in the army shortly after.
Nothing else is known of his life for sure, but his son William was
apprenticed as a blacksmith at Abberton near Colchester. William’s son Nathaniel, was also apprenticed as a
blacksmith near the village of Belchamp Otten, where he married Elizabeth
HELSDON daughter of the parish clerk, but died in 1788 just after the last of
their six children was born. Nathaniel's children remained in the same part of
Essex. One of them, also named Nathaniel, married Harriet AGER and settled in
nearby Ovington. Two of their sons
William and Henry, however moved south to Rochford, where Henry married
Martha WENDON in 1858 and then set up a market garden in Shoebury. Henry's eldest son, Herbert Henry, became a
carpenter and started a firm of house-builders in Shoebury. The firm was continued and expanded by his eldest
son also named Herbert Henry, born 1887 in Shoebury. This Herbert Henry married (secondly) Amy
BLEWETT in 1926 and four children were born in Shoebury. One of them, Geoffrey, born 1930, is the author of
these notes. |
