5 Sarah EVANS 1780-1871

6 John EVANS

spouse's records

m James  SMITHERS 1803

Sarah was born in 1780 in the small village of Froyle, Hampshire, which is about 16 miles west of Guildford on the main road to Winchester.  It seems likely that she moved to Guildford either in service or with her family, since when she was 23 she married at Stoke next Guildford.  Her husband was the recently widowed James SMITHER from the neighbouring parish of Worplesdon

James became a famer in Worplesdon and they baptised five children there.  At the age of 60 Sarah was living at Perry Hill in the centre of the village with James and her unmarried son Henry.  The other children had married and moved away after receiving property in Windsor from the will of Sarah's brother James Evans.  Henry married soon after and moved to London, and in 1844 her husband James died of heart disease.

Sarah spent the rest of her life with one or other of her children.  For a while, she moved to Windsor; her youngest son James kept a public house at Bray in 1845 and in 1851 she was living at Windsor with Frederick her eldest son. Both James and Frederick had been bequeathed property in Windsor by Sarah's brother James

Sarah’s daughter Ann married James MAY, parish clerk at Worplesdon; and for at least the last ten years of her life, Sarah lived with Ann back at Perry Hill in the centre of Worplesdon.  She died in 1871 of old age, aged 90, and was buried in Worplesdon.  She made a will leaving everything (less than £100) to he daughter Ann

Three census records show that Sarah EVANS was born in Froyle Hampshire about 1781.  There is one and only one suitable baptism in the Froyle register:

C  6Aug1780 Sarah d John & Elizabeth EVANS

the affidavit to correct the 1816 baptismal record in the Worplesdon register of James SMITHER 4 shows that his parents were James SMITHERS and Sarah EVANS.  There is a suitable marriage in the neighbouring parish of Stoke next Guildford:

m 10Sep1803 Stoke next Guildford: James x SMITHER of Worplesdon parish and Sarah EVANS spr otp by banns

witness: Rebekah x SOUTH, Thomas x S--hor   [Smither?]

However there is an earlier Worplesdon entry for m of James SMITHER to Jane STRUDWICK followed by  burial of Jane:

m 31Mar1801 Worplesdon:James x SMITHER otp & Jane x STRUDWICK otp by banns; wit: Thomas STRUDWICK, JI

B 14Aug1801 Worplesdon: Jane, 21, wife of James SMITHER, Perry Hill

There is no corroborating evidence that this is the same James, but there is no other suitable James in the Worplesdon register, and James was of Perry Hill when he baptised his children

from Worplesdon register:

C 27Jul1805 Frederick s James  & Elizabeth SMITHERS, Perry Hill

C  1Mar1807 Martha    d James & Sarah SMITHER,       Perry Hill

C 11Sep1808 Louisa    d James  & Mary{?} SMITHER,    Perry Hill

C 22Oct1809 Hannah    d James & Sarah SMITHER,       Perry Hill

C 11Jul1813 Henry     s James & Sarah SMITHER, labourer;

C 17Nov1816 James Smither s James & Sarah SMITHER    b10Oct1816

from census:

b c1806 Frederick; proves that the register entry of Elizabeth as mother was an error for Sarah

b c1810 Ann  -     probably a contraction of Hannah; m James MAY at Shere 1Mar1841

the entry for Louisa’s mother is another error, Mary for Sarah.  No other records  found of James and Mary and Louisa is mentiones in James Evans' will as his niece.
