The Cornish BLEWETTs are said to be derived from the thirteen
sons of Francis & Elizabeth BLEWETT of Colan. Colan is a few miles inland from Newquay and the family is
known from a memorial in the parish church and the Visitation of
Cornwall. The sons were born around
1530-1560 before the start of the parish register so their names are not
known. Francis however was the son of
Richard BLEWETT of Holcombe Rogus in Devon. The first occurrence of the name BLEWETT in Cornish parish registers shows that they were indeed originally concentrated in the area around Colan, particularly the triangle bounded by Colan Bodmin and Camelford. Of the Cornish parish registers that have survived from the last quarter of the 16C, the BLEWETT surname occurs in only six parishes, all within the C-B-C triangle. A similar story is given by the Cornwall Protestation return of
1641, which is virtually a list of all Cornish males over the age of 18. It contains only 33 BLEWETTs and 23 (70%) of these occur in the
Colan-Bodmin-Camelford triangle. Elizabeth Blewett of Colan was the daughter of Tristram
COLAN. Both Tristram and Colan were
used by the Blewett family as Christian names. These are so unusual, that their occurrence can be attributed
with some confidence to a descent from the Colan BLEWETT family. One daughter of Colan BLEWETT of Colan
was christened Blanch which is also sufficiently uncommon to identify a Colan
descendant. The parishes in which
these names have been found are listed below with the date of first occurrence:
St Tudy, St Breward, Egloshayle and Colan are in the C-B-C
triangle; Boyton is in the NE corner of Cornwall and shows that Colan
descendants were here at an early date.
Camborne, St Allen, St Just and Madron demonstrate a movement towards
the west of the County in the 17C The first mention of BLEWETT in the Paul parish register was in
1719 nearly 200 years after the family arrived in Colan. The early entries refer to the family of
John BLEWETT who possibly arrived from Padstow in 1719 (see the Paul tree). All the many BLEWETT families of Paul however are derived from
William BLEWETT bc1710 and John BLEWETT bc1740 neither of whom can at present
be related to the earlier John or to each other. Hypothetically, William could be the grandson C1713 of Thomas of
St Levan who could be the son C1640 of George of Madron who was probably
baptised at Plymouth in 1593, son of Francis. This provides a very speculative link with the Devon family
(see the St Levan tree for more detail). |

William was born around 1710, possibly in the fishing village of St Levan near Land’s End, but he married Elizabeth in 1733 at Paul and became one of the two founders of all the numerous BLEWETT families in Mousehole.William was probably a fisherman, as was his son Stephen, his grandson John Carne, and his gt.grandson Michael who were all baptised and married in the parish church of Paul, one mile inland from the harbour and village of Mousehole. No record has been found of the burial of Stephen or John Carne, and in of the hazards of fishing from small sailing ships, it is possible that they were both lost at sea. Michael was not lost at sea, but also died at a relatively early age of 56, from pneumonia. Michael’s
son Henry joined the Mousehole fishing fleet like his ancestors, but at the
age of 16, he left to begin the first of many voyages on merchant sailing
ships. He became the captain of a ship which sailed regularly to the West
Indies for 14 years between 1866 and 1880.
He moved to Stepney in London where his son Henry Michael was born. Henry
Michael sailed with his father on merchant ships several times, before
settling in Stepney as a marine store dealer and rope merchant. His business prospered and he moved to
Thorpe Bay in Essex, where his daughter Amy married the local builder who had
built his fine house on the sea front. |
